I think you are confusing the effect of Toadscruel, because the card mentions that you cannot return cards to your hand for opponent's abilities and Trainer cards, which would mean that it is only Pokémon abilities or Trainers, but a card like Item, such as Energy Reatrival or Superior Energy Retrieval is neither a skill nor a trainer card.
I don't know if I am confused or mistaken, if someone can clarify it.
